Somerville Productions is a feminist theatre company dedicated to amplifying the voices of Womxn, LGBTQIA and BIPOC artists. In 2018, founder Colleen Somerville realized she could no longer reconcile her lifelong love of musical theatre with her feminist heart and decided to do something about it. Collaborating with a group of other talented and angry feminists, Somerville Productions premiered Not Fair, My Lady!, a pointed and hilarious skewering of musical theatre misogyny at the Minnesota Fringe Festival, garnering 3 Golden Lanyard awards. The following year, SP took on its next formidable foes — the diet industry, media representation, and our own complicated relationships with our bodies — with SIZE, another collaboratively-created Fringe Festival hit. Always looking for new and different ways to uplift and support diverse voices, the company has gone on to produce several cabarets and variety shows, both in person and virtually via Facebook Live. As live musical theatre lies dormant, Somerville Productions is continuing to seek ways to challenge the systems within the form that silence so many voices and envision fresh and creative ways to pass the mic.
